Well I have had this for a while, but I realized it might make more sense to put it out there in the open. There is a free program for the iPhone that lets the iPhone user send text messages to any USA # for free and it just uses the data (either the 3G/E connections via phone carrier or WiFi access). One neat extra feature is the ability to start group text conversations when trying to plan where to go out, and so on.
My main point of this is that it’s crazy useful to use while being abroad. I signed up with a free username and if anybody (in the USA) wants to text me, you send a message to 60611 and my username is “robrogan,” big surprise. It will cost you whatever you pay for a text message, but fortunate for Americans, those are usually bundled into plans. Yay, plans.
Chances are good that I won’t see your messages unless I’m connected to WiFi though, due to my lack of AT&T and their infinite shower of 3G data. So be patient, but enjoy the free texts to me no matter where I am. I think I get an even bigger kick out of it than you do. For some reason my iPhone isn’t letting me send messages to international numbers even if I have the money to do so.
In short:
60611: robrogan
